Kid Time Carnegie Library Proposal Update
First, THANK YOU to all of you who have chimed in on Kid Time's proposal to lease the former Carnegie Library building in downtown Medford! All of your comments and questions - in person, through our website, and on Facebook - have been thoughtful and supportive. Please know how much we appreciate your participation. We plan to solicit more of it as we move forward with this process!
As one of two organizations to submit a proposal to the city we want to keep you in the loop with regard to our proposal's status: So far we've submitted a written packet of information including our current operating levels and plans should we be awarded the property (view the full proposal here), and presented at a city council study session. We anticipate the next step will be a short presentation/public hearing at a city council meeting to be followed by public comment. Soon after, city council members should make a decision. Right now, the Carnegie building is empty except for a small insurance company and rooms used for meeting space. Council members can choose to lease the building to one of the two organizations vying for it, or decide neither organization meets the Carnegie mission or needs of the city, and stay with the status quo.
That's where you come in! If councilors see public interest in leasing a historic building dedicated to education to a thriving non-profit focused on early learning, they may be more inclined to vote to put that building out to lease. We think the public hearing will take place in February or March. When it does we hope those of you who love us will turn out in support! If you don't already have a Kid Time pin to wear, we have one for you! We'll keep you posted!
